Middle Basin


Major acid contributors in the middle basin include Rock Camp and Pierce Run. Rock Camp is the most consistent contributor of AMD, and has net acidic water regardless of flow. Pierce Run has experienced some net alkaline flows; it is thought that this might result from cur­rent mining operations in the area.

Future Projects


Pierce Run - Oreton Seep

Two priority acid mine drainage (AMD) sites were identified as the largest acid load contributors in the Pierce Run subwatershed in the AMDAT Plan for the Middle Basin of Raccoon Creek in 2003.  The two sites were named the Oreton Seep and the Highwall Seep. This AMD treatment project will focus on treating the overall acid load from Pierce Run into Raccoon Creek through passive AMD treatment at the Oreton Seep and an aerobic wetland in Pierce Run for metal precipitates capture. 

Ohio University, Voinovich School, has secured EPA Section 319(h) funding to construct an AMD treatment project in Pierce Run.  The project timeline is September 2007 – December 2009.  The project will entail alkaline addition and wetland enhancement for metal precipitate storage.  The project is focused on reducing acid and metal loads to Raccoon Creek from Pierce Run by treating the Oreton Seep, which accounts for approximately 80% of the acid load to Pierce Run.  The AMD treatment project is currently in the design phase (ATC Associates).  A preliminary design should be complete April 2008 and a final design by August 2008.  Construction of the treatment system will likely occur in 2009.
